BSA Best Beverage Experience Award - BEV-E
The BEV-E Award Ceremony was held at the industry dinner at BEV-X on 16th
October hosted by Paul Miekle-Janney and Ranald Paterson. All
finalists were invited to a pre-dinner reception where celebration glasses
of champagne got the evening off to a good start.
All of the regional winners were introduced with a short presentation on their
business and they were then presented with their Award for winning their region,
an inscribed plate produced by Simon Martin of Quickfire Tableware,
the originator of the BEV-E Awards idea.
A new Award for Best Mobile Coffee Cart was then awarded
to Ian Holmes of Café 2 U in Leeds. His franchisor, Alex
Dawson, also present, had had several franchises entered into the
competition, was naturally delighted.
The award for BEV-E Winner 2007 was then announced by Ranald who had carried
out the last round of Regional and Final judging. In announcing that
for the first time there was a joint winner, he said that The Bottle
Kiln and Sadliers Coffee Lounge were so close in
scores, even though their businesses are fundamentally different, they couldn’t
be separated and therefore they were both declared winners. Maxine
Sadlier accepted the award on behalf of Sadliers, and Maxine
Beadsmore and Joy Bostock accepted on behalf of The Bottle
Kiln.
Sadliers Coffee Lounge, owned and run by Maxine Sadlier, is a small coffee
shop in Tettenshall, Wolverhampton and has been open for just two years. All
of their food is home made and all coffees are hand-crafted by Paul Sadlier.
The Bottle Kiln, a family business run by Becky Stone, has been open for 20
years, and includes the café, an art gallery, Japanese garden and gift
shops all built around the old bottle kiln.
Both of these establishments are well worth a visit for anyone either in Wolverhampton
or Derbyshire.
Past winners of the BEV-E Award are Leoni The Coffee House in Malton, Lakeside
Café in Leeds and The Coach House in Skipton, which means that including
Café 4 U, Yorkshire has a winner in every year of the awards!

WINNER OF 2006 BEV-E AWARDS & Northern REGIONAL
Leoni – The Coffee House of Malton, North Yorkshire
Simon ROBERSTON has worked very hard to create a true café culture
at The Coffee House established 10 years ago. He hopes that his passion
for coffee has helped the coffee shop become something of an institution
in the town and his customers have even christened themselves “espresso
disciples” On receiving the award he said “ I am overjoyed
to voted the number one coffee shop in the country. This award is a
team effort and would not have been possible without the support and
dedication of my staff. They always go that extra mile when serving
customers which is why we are so successful and have such a loyal following.
Over the last ten years we have worked very hard to create a true café culture
and serve the very best coffee” Simon is an aficionado of coffee
and has been three times winner of the UK’s National Barista
Championships.

The 2006 BEV-E REGIONAL WINNERS were:
South West REGIONAL WINNER: Coffee # from Gloucester Road, Bishopton,
Bristol
James Shapland gave up a successful career in the City to establish
Coffee #1 and he now has 9 outlets across Bristol and Wales. The Gloucester
Road café is very cosy and inviting with a Canadian old store
feel. James says that his main focus is on serving the very best coffee
which is increasingly organic and Fairtrade and has recently been to
India to meet the farmers producing his coffee.

South East REGIONAL WINNER: The Chequers at Millbrook, Bedford.
Thomas POLTI runs The Chequers with this parent and brother. It is
located in a former pub and the building dates back over 300 years.
It was established 8 years ago with a view to creating a continental
style bar and restaurant. Being half Italian Thomas has a passion for
serving the very best coffee and in fact The Chequers has its own coffee
brand called Supremo.

Midlands REGIONAL WINNER: Bottle Kiln, West Hallan, Derbyshire
Rebecca STONE’s father established THE BOTTLE KILN 20 years ago.
It is located in a former 1920’s bottle kiln which is a listed
building and is now decorated in a contemporary style. Rebecca explained
that they have created their own roast of coffee which has a rich and
smooth flavour and is a big hit with customers. The Bottle Kiln is
a very tranquil place to enjoy coffee in landscaped Japanese themed
gardens.

the national winner of the 2005 BEV-E AWARDS.
The Lakeside Café, which overlooks the picturesque Waterloo Lake in
Roundhay Park, Leeds, was originally a council-run Tea Rooms. Just 9 months
ago, it was taken over by David Rogers, who also operates the Cavendish Pavilion
Restaurant in Bilton Abbey, nr Skipton, and also the Falls Café sited
near the Waterfalls in Ingelton - both in North Yorkshire.
With such experience of scenic locations, clearly David and his team know
how to maximise the appeal of their locations, and his knowledge and expertise
has brought style, service and ambience to Roundhay Park – to the delight
and benefit of Leeds residents and visitors.
Lakeside Café opens daily at 10 a.m. for breakfast; offers lunch
from 12 noon; and closes at 5 p.m., 7 days a week, 364 days a year. It
is, however,
also available for private hire in the evenings – affording a perfect
location for Wedding Receptions; Birthday Parties; or any Dinner event.
